As the state's largest local health insurer, Blue Cross Blue
Shield of Arizona (BCBSAZ) has been dedicated to offering health
insurance products or services to Arizonans for 64 years.
1.8 million Arizonans
We touch the lives of 1.8 million Arizonans every year - from
the 860,000 individuals, small business owners and large employers
who rely on us to provide their health insurance products or
services - to the 690,000 Medicare-eligible Arizonans who rely
upon us to process their claims as Medicare's Part A fiscal
intermediary.
85 million Americans
BCBSAZ is one of 42 independent licensees of the Blue Cross
Blue Shield Association. Nearly 85 million Americans - or
one in four people - carry a Blue Cross and Blue Shield ID
card. The Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association licenses
BCBSAZ to offer certain products and services under the Blue
Cross and Blue Shield names.
6.8 million claims
BCBSAZ processed 6.8 million claims last year - about 27,000
claims each day. 5.8 million claims were processed for our
commercial customers and 1 million claims were processed for
Medicare.
$2.3 billion
BCBSAZ processed $2.3 billion in claims volume last year,
including Medicare.
98 percent accuracy
We paid our commercial claims last year with a 98 percent
accuracy rate.
95 percent satisfaction rating
In 2002, nearly 95 percent of our customers rated us favorably
by indicating they were satisfied or very satisfied with BCBSAZ.
This included brokers, physicians, employer groups, individuals
and hospital administrators we surveyed throughout the year.
By keeping our focus on customers, we have been able to maintain
high satisfaction scores every year.
1.4 million phone calls
Our claims and customer service team answered 1.4 million
phone calls last year - about 6,000 phone calls each day -
with an average hold time of 17 seconds or less.
6,900 physicians
Our network of participating physicians and hospitals continues
to prosper. We now have agreements with nearly all Arizona
hospitals and more than 6,900 Arizona physicians.
1,358 employees
BCBSAZ has 1,358 dedicated employees in our Phoenix, Tempe,
Tucson and Flagstaff offices. About one in three of our employees
has been with us 10 years or more. Our top 10 senior staff
executives have 153 years of combined service.
